The network infrastructure is often the part of the system that gets forgotten but often offers the most potential for performance gains.

Most small businesses will have a program of desktop PC replacement - usually every 3-4 years. They will also look to replace servers periodically and printers/other peripherals as and when necessary. The network hardware (routers, hubs and switches etc) is all too often forgotten however.

Technology hasn't stood still for networking hardware either and in an average small business a lot of data can traverse the network every day. With networked applications, internet traffic and centralised printers, changing a hub from an ageing 10Mbit unit to a 10/100MB switch can offer large performance gains. If you are using large databases or multimedia applications you may even want to consider Gigabit technology as costs have now fallen considerably.

Speeds of over 100Mbits are now also commonplace over wireless links and this is now a viable option for difficult sites or those divided by main roads etc!

If you have remote offices linked by ISDN or dial-up connections you may want to consider utilising the fixed costs of ADSL to implement a 'Virtual Private Network' (VPN) to link the sites securely via the internet.
